COLUMBUS, Ga. — Democrats have broken Republican control of Georgia’s Public Service Commission for the first time in nearly two decades after Dr. Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard defeated Republican incumbents in Tuesday’s election.
Johnson defeated incumbent Tim Echols in District 2, while Hubbard beat incumbent Fitz Johnson in District 3.
The wins flip two district seats to Democrats on the five-member commission that helps regulate utility companies and influences what Georgians pay for electricity and natural gas.
Historic shift in commission control
“The fact that these two members were elected on a state wide ballot is a breakthrough for the Democrats," said Auburn University Politcal Science Professor Joseph Aistrup.
