Toledo City Council banned the sale of synthetic kratom products within city limits Wednesday.
The measure, spearheaded by Councilman Sam Melden, prohibits the sale of kratom that is defined as “a synthetic material that contains the alkaloid mitragynine or 7-hydroxymitragynine or mitragynine pseudoindoxy.” It also prohibits the sale of any product that contains more than 2 percent of 7-hydroxymitragynine in the alkaloid fraction.
Kratom’s natural leaf is not included in the ban.
The ordinance passed unanimously in a vote of 12-0. It was co-sponsored by Councilmen Vanice Williams, John Hobbs III, and Theresa Morris.
“This amendment only covers the synthetic products — these derivatives and all of these wild, wild forms,” Mr. Melden said. “So the natural leaf would still be allowed.”
