Detectives from SA Police's Major Crime branch have started a search for the remains of a Mount Gambier woman who went missing 37 years ago.

SA Police confirmed on Thursday that detectives — with the help of STAR group officers, State Emergency Services and local police — started a new search at a property at Compton, several kilometres from Mount Gambier.

Police said the search, at the one square kilometre property on Burnda Road, would likely last for two days.

Ms Bernie was 34 when she was last seen at her Mount Gambier home in January, 1988.

Police said they were first alerted to her disappearance on February 10, 1988 when her family became concerned for Ms Bernie's welfare after not hearing from her for several weeks.
