A surfer was hospitalized with multiple leg injuries Wednesday after a shark attack in Kauai’s Hanalei Bay.
Kauai County stated in a news release that a local male resident was bitten at about 3:10 p.m. on Nov. 5 near Pine Trees, a popular surfing break.
The victim was treated by first responders and transported to Wilcox Medical Center. The extent of his injuries was unclear.
Ocean Safety Bureau officials closed Hanalei Bay beaches to swimming and surfing until further notice. The state's Department of Land and Natural Resources planned to evaluate the situation Thursday morning.
The type and size of the shark was not known, but tiger sharks are implicated in most attacks in Hawaiian waters.
