Manchester United's director of football Jason Wilcox expressed it best himself this week when discussing the club's transfer strategy.

"Right now, I'm having weekly meetings with the recruitment team on the different profiles, the age bracket, the cost. Are they attainable? With Ruben as well, so it is a really joined-up approach," he told MUTV's Inside Carrington podcast .

In truth, this is exactly what any self-respecting Premier League club should be doing. If United are going to be sustained challengers in the top four, they need to be planning all-year round.
