More than 1,600 of the region's school students - and over 100 staff to wrangle them - have taken over the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre (TRECC) as they run through rehearsals for the two-yearly CAPERS extravaganza running this weekend.

Titled 'Tapestry', this year's performance celebrates the "individuality and unity" of the students with two hours of music, dance, and dramatic works, with performances on both Friday and Saturday.

"We've worked out a sequence of events that we want to interweave between the theme of Tapestry - dances and songs and choreography to go through all of that," said Chris Jackson, director of educational leadership, Western Plains.

Mr Jackson has been organising students, teachers, parents, volunteers, and even former CAPERS performers
