October 10, 1966 A wet and noisy rainstorm hit San Diego early this morning, upsetting the usual Monday morning routine with more than 100 minor traffic accidents, flooded streets and power failures. One of the major traffic tie-ups was this 15-car pileup on Interstate 5 at Hawthorn Street. Traffic officers pointed out that the first rain of the season always causes the oil-soaked streets to get as slick as glass. There were so many minor fender-benders that police had to limit their coverage only to injury accidents. Also keeping them busy were the lightning strikes and power failures. Lightning splintered this power pole at Bancroft and Orange, scattering bits of wood for fifty feet.
