Vladimir Putin has called for an assessment into whether preparations should start for full-scale nuclear tests, the Russian president’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
The comments follow Russian defense minister Andrey Belousov announcing that Moscow should “immediately” prepare for "full-scale" nuclear tests after Donald Trump had earlier said the U.S. would resume testing its nuclear weapons for the first time in decades.
Peskov told Russian state media that Moscow was “committed” to its obligations under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty but that Putin “has instructed to assess whether it is necessary to begin preparations,” state news agency TASS reported.
