Lake Forest and Saint Mark's survived in five sets and Tower Hill and Caravel earned sweeps to advance to the semifinals of the DIAA Girls Volleyball Tournament.
The sixth-seeded Spartans took the first two sets at No. 3 Newark Charter then rallied for a 15-12 fifth-set victory. No. 16 Saint Mark's, who knocked off top-seeded Caesar Rodney in the second round, won the last two sets over No. 8 Smyrna.
No. 4 Caravel defeated No. 12 MOT Charter with resounding wins in the second and third sets.
In a raucous Archmere gymnasium, No. 7 Tower Hill held off a late surge by the second-seeded Auks. Archmere erased a 24-18 lead in the third set, taking a 25-24 lead before Tower Hill scored three straight points, punctuated by a Sydney Fischer kill.
