Nobel Laureate James Robinson believes the proliferation of artificial intelligence could be 'calamitous' for the majority of humanity.
"The drive of all of the tech barons is to replace people, to bring robots, to have self-driving cars, self-driving trucks, and get rid of people. That's going to push wages down," the British-American economist— who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences with Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson for their research on how institutions shape a nation's prosperity—told CNBC-TV18.
While he drew a parallel with the way computers replaced people in a lot of professions, the 65-year-old Robinson believes AI threatens jobs even for those with substantial education and experience.
