A Pittsburgh man has gained widespread attention for his efforts to combat food insecurity by establishing a food pantry in his front yard. AJ Owen's initiative began with a $150 grocery shopping trip with his sons on a Steelers Sunday, aimed at supporting their local community. His TikTok video, posted on October 26, showcased a small food pantry filled with nonperishable items and snacks sourced from ALDI.
The project gained momentum after Owen shared a follow-up video revealing an anonymous cash donation he received to support his pantry. The envelope contained several hundred dollar bills and a note that read, "May God prosper and bless your food pantry." This video has since attracted over 16 million views on TikTok. Owen described his emotional reaction, saying, "My body started shaking. I started crying. And this was the best cry ever, because whatever you want to believe, an angel truly, you know, came down and blessed us that day. And we've been doing good ever since."
Owen has actively promoted his pantry on local community Facebook pages to raise awareness. The pantry is stocked with a variety of items, including bread, fresh eggs, salad dressing, vegetables, fruit bars, and instant meals. In the past week, Owen has expanded his efforts as donations have increased, including contributions from local police. He has made additional trips to Costco and set up long plastic tables to accommodate the growing supply.
Owen also received a surprise visit from Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Yahya Black and his fiancée, who delivered a significant amount of food for the pantry. Owen recounted an interaction with a community member who hesitated to take food, saying, "I had one person say, 'Oh, well, I have enough for one or two days. So when that's gone, I'll come over.' And I said, 'No, come now.'"
The impact of Owen's initiative has spread beyond Pittsburgh, inspiring others to create similar mini food pantries in their communities. He estimates that his pantry has already assisted at least 100 families. Owen remains committed to his mission, stating, "People need to eat. People deserve to be fed -- it's no different than me inviting you over to my house for dinner. Come on -- grab a meal, grab a drink. Whatever you need, I'm here."
