The Department for Work and Pensions is urging two groups of state pensioners to take urgent action. The Labour Party government has widened Winter Fuel Payment eligibility for winter, with retirees set for either £100, £200 or £300 sums.

And while the payment from the Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) is automatic, two groups will have to lodge claims to the benefits department.

Those who have never received the Winter Fuel Payment before or those who have deferred their State Pension since their last Winter Fuel Payment need to make a claim, according to the government's guidance on its website.
