A Labour councillor had to apologise after likening ex-Conservative South Ayrshire Council Leader Martin Dowey to the former ‘Prince’ Andrew. ‌

The barb was made during a heated discussion about committee nominations and political balance. ‌

Councillor Philip Saxton compared Councillor Dowey to Prince Andrew — before apologising and being reined in by the chair. ‌

Cllr Dowey was attending his first council meeting since being voted back in as Conservative group leader – six months after resigning over a recording of a conversation with a construction firm boss.

A police investigation cleared him of any criminality, although an investigation is ongoing by the Ethical Standards Commission.
