ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. —

The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of scams that look to exploit those with SNAP benefits during the federal government shutdown.

Sheriff Kraus said one of those scams promises the target an immediate $1,000 for food purchases by clicking a link.

That link is used to steal personal information, including Social Security numbers.

A second scam involves a caller or text message looking for your EBT card number and PINs to unlock or verify SNAP eligibility.

The sheriff is urging residents to remain cautious and reminding the public that social service agencies will not ask for the information in the above scams.
