The final lab monkey that escaped in a crash on Interstate 59 in Mississippi last week has been captured near a home in Heidelberg, a town about two hours north of Biloxi, Jasper County authorities confirmed.
"We are monkey free," Sheriff Randy Johnson said Thursday morning.
Johnson said the Sheriff's Department received a call about a sighting of the monkey at about 2 p.m. Wednesday, and Heidelberg police and the company responsible for transporting the monkey responded.
The primate was tranquilized and taken into the custody of the transport company in less than 2 hours, Johnson said.
The final monkey made it over a week before its capture, capping a search that made national headlines and become the subject of jokes on late-night TV shows.
