Spurred by expected delays in SNAP benefits and an influx of demand at Louisiana food banks , a St. Tammany resident is holding a food drive at the St. Tammany Parish Government Complex on Saturday.
Joan Simon said at least a dozen people have signed up to collect food items like cereal, applesauce, cooking oil and other non-perishable goods on Saturday and deliver them to the Northshore Food Bank.
Simon said she was motivated by the uncertainty around the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps, which provides food assistance to millions of Americans that has been subject to delays and cuts by the Trump administration this month because of the ongoing government shutdown.
