With their overwhelming approval of Proposition 50, California voters signaled their clear and unmistakable disdain for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. They also delivered Gov. Gavin Newsom a signature political victory that cements his status as the leading Democratic frontrunner for the 2028 presidential election.

“Donald Trump poked the bear. And the bear roared back,” declared Newsom. “Tonight, California sent a powerful message to Donald Trump. We will fight for our democracy. And we will win.”

As of this writing Wednesday afternoon, the “Yes” side received nearly 64% of the vote. That’s a thumping no matter how you spin it.
