DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – An inmate who was found dead at the Dorchester County Detention Center has been identified.

Nathaniel Witherspoon, 71, of Charleston, was found unresponsive in his cell at the time of uniform change around 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers.

Witherspoon was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:15 a.m. He will undergo an autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
