Flags in South Dakota are being flown at half-staff to honor former Vice President Dick Cheney, who died Nov. 4.

South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden ordered flags to be lowered statewide effective immediately the morning of Nov. 6, according to a news release from his office.

Cheney served as vice president under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009 and was considered one of the most powerful VPs in American history , according to USA Today.

Flags will remain at half-staff until the day of Cheney's interment.
