LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear provided an update on how Team Kentucky is helping residents affected by the temporary loss of food assistance.
With the federal government shutdown, SNAP benefits, which nearly 600,000 Kentuckians rely on, were suspended Nov. 1.
Beshear joined leaders from 24 states and the District of Columbia in challenging the Trump administration’s suspension of SNAP. A federal judge ruled in Kentucky’s favor on Oct. 31 and ordered that funding be restored.
While waiting for the federal government to implement the ruling, Beshear directed $5 million from the state budget reserve trust fund to Feeding Kentucky food banks, which were seeing increased demand.
He also authorized the Kentucky National Guard to assist with staffing at food banks as needed.
