Police believe a man who was fatally shot in Melbourne's outer north in July was killed by organised crime figures from New South Wales who travelled to Victoria specifically for the hit.

Athan Boursinos, 21, was shot dead in a laneway behind a property in Champions Parade, Wollert shortly before 9am on July 31.

At the time, police said the shooting appeared "very deliberate and obviously targeted", which has since been backed up by their investigations.

Detective Acting Superintendent Mark Hatt said they received information that the murder of Mr Boursinos was sanctioned by an interstate organised crime syndicate.
