Hundreds of Queensland babies may have missed out on receiving their vital newborn blood screening test across three years.
Queensland Health screens newborns for specific serious medical conditions, including some severe genetic disorders, through a heel-prick blood test for more than 30 conditions, such as cystic fibrosis.
It is considered an important part of healthcare for babies, detecting conditions that may not show up in symptoms at birth but can be life-threatening if not treated early.
The ABC can reveal that in July last year, the health department became aware of "inconsistencies" in records of the newborn blood spot (NBS) screening program.
Those "inconsistencies" were identified as part of continuous quality improvement processes, rather than linked to a specific patient.
