Dungeons & Dragons casts a wide net with the new book Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn. Unlike its companion, Adventures in Faerûn , this " Player Expansion " isn't just another book for dungeon masters. A cover emblazoned with Karlach and Minsc broadcasts that message, employing familiar icons to draw the eyes of Baldur's Gate fans who might not even play D&D .
That broad appeal, however, comes with challenges of its own. Plenty of dungeon masters buy multiple D&D books a year, but for players on the other side of the DM screen, justifying the purchase of anything beyond the Player's Handbook can be harder. Heroes of Faerûn uses a variety of new character options as its calling card, but the reading material on the Forgotten Realms at large might be what decides
