SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — With just over a week until the deadline for the Utah Republican Party to turn in 140,748 signatures to repeal the Utah legislature's redistricted map, known as map C, the party is not gathering signatures for that effort.

That's according to party chair Rob Axson, who says that their goal was never to get the referendum done; it was to answer the question of whether a Congressional map should be decided by a judge when the constitution, in his belief, gives that authority to the legislature.

"We're not doing this just as a process to check the box or do the bare minimum. We really are trying to embrace this as an opportunity to talk with and hear from Utahns and to educate Utahns on the importance of representative government," Axson told ABC4.com.
