ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Monroe County has released data from its 2024 childhood lead testing report, showing an increase in children with elevated lead exposure compared to 2023.

In 2024, 13,582 children were tested for lead poisoning, six percent more than in 2023. Officials found that 299 children had elevated blood lead levels of 5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL) or higher, up from 241 cases the year before. They say the increase is partly due to expanded testing and outreach efforts.

In New York, all children aged 1 to 2 must be tested for lead, with continued screening until age 6. Lead poisoning can cause severe developmental issues, such as learning disabilities and behavioral problems. Homes built before 1978 continue to pose a significant risk because of lead-based paint.
