Some of Friday's flights at Boston Logan International Airport have started to be canceled because of new, federally mandated air traffic restrictions , airport officials said Thursday.

"We are expecting airlines to reach out to passengers directly. We urge passengers to check with their airline before coming to the airport," said a spokesman for Massport, which oversees Logan airport, in an email.

The Federal Aviation Administration had said Wednesday that it was taking the extraordinary step of reducing air traffic by 10% across 40 "high-volume" markets beginning Friday morning to maintain travel safety as air traffic controllers, who have been working unpaid since the shutdown began on Oct. 1, are strained.
