As the federal government shutdown continues, one local leader is taking action to help residents feeling the strain.
During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Councilman Ron Elliott introduced two resolutions aimed at easing financial pressure on families impacted by the shutdown.
“I will be introducing two resolutions,” Elliott said. “It’s a measure to try to put as little burden on our citizens as possible—to give them some breathing room during this difficult time.”
The first resolution would temporarily halt water shutoffs for unpaid sewer bills until SNAP benefits resume or the federal government reopens -- whichever comes first. Elliott says the goal is to prevent struggling families from losing access to essential services.
