HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Legacy businesses are rare to find nowadays, but there’s one family that’s carrying on their grandfather’s business that started up over a century ago.

79-year-old Benjamin Takayesu and his sister, 76-year-old Alison Takayesu Kessner, comes from a legacy of bicycle entrepreneurs.

Their grandfather, Giei Takayesu, migrated to Hawaii in 1906 and worked in a plantation on Maui. Six years later, their grandmother, who was a picture bride, arrived and worked in the plantation as well. Kessner’s father, Buster, was born the following year.

“They worked really hard for several years on meager salaries, barely covering food and lodging,” said Kessner. “And if there was any money left over, they sent it home to Okinawa to help the families, you know, support their fami
