It’s feeding time again.
Warner Bros. announced it’s officially reviving the Gremlins franchise, with a brand-new installment set to hit theaters in 2027, marking the series’ first film in nearly four decades.
The studio revealed the news during an investor call Thursday, Nov. 6, confirming that Steven Spielberg will return as executive producer through his company Amblin Entertainment, Variety reports. The original 1984 film’s screenwriter, Pennsylvania native Chris Columbus, is set to direct and co-produce the long-awaited sequel, titled Gremlins 3.
Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, the duo behind this summer’s horror hit Final Destination: Bloodlines, will co-write the screenplay. Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, Michael Barnathan, and Mark Radcliffe are also producing. Plot details and casting remain under wraps.
The first Gremlins, released in 1984 and directed by Joe Dante, followed a young man who receives a mysterious creature called a Mogwai — with strict rules to never get it wet, feed it after midnight, or expose it to bright light. Naturally, all three rules are broken, unleashing a horde of mischievous little monsters that wreak havoc during Christmas.
The film became a massive hit, grossing over $200 million worldwide and helping inspire the PG-13 movie rating. Its 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, took a more comedic turn and later gained cult status despite a modest box office run.
“Few titles are as beloved and iconic as Gremlins, and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation,” said Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Pictures’ president of development and production. “It’s a privilege to be working alongside Steven, Chris, and the entire creative team.”
Gremlins 3 is expected to hit theaters in November 2027.
