The Los Angeles Zoo has a new baby Bornean orangutan, the first in nearly 15 years at the zoo.
Officials say the baby was born Oct. 10 to 43-year-old mom, Kalim and 31-year-old dad, Isim.
Bornean orangutans are categorized as “critically endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
This is the first offspring for the pair, Kalim and Isim, but the third offspring for mom, Kalim.
The zoo's curator of mammals, Candace Sclimenti, says it's the first orangutan birth there in nearly 15 years.
Zoo officials say of all non-human primates, orangutans have the longest interbirth interval. An infant is cared for by its mother for seven to eight years before another infant is born.
Their wild populations are in decline due to climate change, and habitat loss due to mining and clear cutting of forests for palm oil plantations.
