A teacher's assistant at a Virginia middle school allegedly showed up to work under the influence and is now facing charges, authorities announced.

Chantilly resident Brenda Maxwell, 44, an educator at Seneca Ridge Middle School in Sterling, was taken into custody by members of the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday, following complaints, officials said.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, the School Resource Officer assigned to the building was alerted that Maxwell was possibly under the influence in school.

The subsequent investigation "resulted in a finding that warranted arrest."

Maxwell was taken to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, where she was charged with intoxication in public.

After being processed, Maxwell was later released. No details about her next court appearance were released by the sheriff's office.
