The government shutdown is impacting Alaska’s Veterans Day observances. The annual Veterans Day ceremony at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, originally scheduled for November 11, has been canceled.
Officials with the Alaska Department of Military & Veterans Affairs say the shutdown has restricted funding, preventing them from hosting public events on the base.
Maj. Gen. Torrence Saxe, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard, stressed that the decision was not taken lightly. He encouraged all Alaskans to still take a moment on Veterans Day to honor those who have served.
“While the lapse in appropriations restricts our ability to host public events on base, the Alaska National Guard remains steadfast in its gratitude for the service and sacrifice of Alaska’s veterans,” Saxe said. “
