ARLINGTON, Va. — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says that starting Friday they plan to cancel thousands of flights at 40 major airports across the country as the government shutdown drags on.

All three airports in the Washington Metropolitan region are expected to be impacted by the FAA's decision.
Why are they reducing flights?
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford says they are already seeing disruptions prompted by air traffic controller shortages, which is why they have decided on the estimated 10 percent cut. "We are not going to wait to truly manifest itself when the early indicators are telling us we can take action today," Bedford said Wednesday.
