The Belmont Senior Citizens Club claims it has been “bullied” into accepting the City of Belmont’s terms for a new community bus.

The club has been lobbying for years for a new bus but on Monday “reluctantly signed” a contract for one.

The city and the club will each pay half of the $150,000 needed for the 22-seat Toyota Coaster bus.

The bus includes the latest safety and comfort features and displays the Club’s name on both sides.

The City say the Club will have priority access of a minimum 35 hours a week for at least the next 15 years.

Club treasurer and former Belmont mayor Glenys Godfrey said they felt they had been “bullied” into either agreeing to the city’s terms or not having a bus at all.

“We had to sign it, otherwise we wouldn’t have a bus,” she said.
