The Republican-led House Finance Committee recently rejected the proposed Property Tax Relief Act of 2025 that would give $28 million in annual state aid to support some of the retirement costs for municipal and county employees.

House Majority Leader Jason Osborne, R-Auburn, is banking on a healthy turnout of GOP members early next year so he can avoid the repeat of an embarrassing defeat on this topic in 2024 when Republicans had a smaller majority.

Since the 1968 creation of the New Hampshire Retirement System, the state provided 40% reimbursement of local and county pension costs. The offer began as a way to encourage local government bodies to join the system and make it more financially stable.
