BioPoly LLC has received a U.S. patent for a shoulder implant designed to treat Bankart lesions, the company announced Thursday.
Bankart lesions are a leading cause of chronic shoulder instability and recurrent dislocations, a news release said.
"Unlike traditional procedures that address Bankart lesions with transfer of tissue from one location to another (i.e. Laterjet procedure), BioPoly’s patented design reinforces the damaged labral region with a smooth, cartilage friendly articulating surface that has been engineered from the BioPoly material," the news release said. "The end result is a robust, low-friction interface that stabilizes the shoulder joint while protecting the surrounding cartilage from further wear and tear."
