A standoff at a veterans housing facility in San Jose came to a peaceful end early Thursday morning.

The sheriff's office said the standoff began at around 9 p.m. Wednesday at the facility on Kirk Avenue when a man pulled a gun on a staff member during a verbal altercation.

Deputies worked through the night to de-escalate the situation until just before 5 a.m. Thursday when the man was taken into custody without incident.

Residents were told to shelter in place overnight as a precaution, but deputies said there was never a direct threat to the public.
