CALERA, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Calera community members may have smelled smoke over the last few days as firefighters monitored several controlled burns.
Smoke could be seen from the interstate as a fire burned Thursday at the Rolling Hills campground.
“The city had a few old buildings that they wanted to remove for some future developments, so we burned those today (Thursday) and the fire department’s just here to make sure things don’t get out of control,” said Calera Fire Chief Sean Kendrick.
The city purchased the campground several years ago, which had abandoned cabins taking up space.
The city’s Chief Information Officer, James Fuller, said the nearby RV park stays close to full capacity, with both I-65 travelers and workers in town for temporary work.
