JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A series of deadly crashes have Duval County School Board members pushing for safety upgrades.
The board members met with the Jacksonville City Council Thursday to talk about what more can be done.
"Last year, the academic year was horrible for us," said Duval County Public Schools Police Chief Jackson Short. "We had 43 students struck as pedestrians, and three of those were fatal."
Short says this school year hasn't started much better, with 10 students already struck and two killed.
"It's a very concerning topic for us," said Short.
Duval Schools leaders presented some possible solutions, starting with its "Be Safe, Be Seen" campaign to educate students, while also upgrading school uniforms with lighter or reflective colors.
