ROSELAND, La. — Smitty's Supply could be on the hook for millions of dollars if they're found to be liable of the 13 claims laid out in a lawsuit filed this week by the federal government. This is the first time since the massive August explosion in Roseland that the government is taking formal action against the company.
A joint lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality accuses Smitty’s Supply of violating multiple sections of the Clean Water Act and state environmental laws, both before and after the explosion.
The filing marks the government’s first concrete step to hold the company accountable, coming just weeks after Governor Jeff Landry gave a noncommittal response when asked about Smitty’s future accountability, saying, "
