SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) - Spartanburg Community College is facing legal trouble after the family of the “world’s smartest dog” filed a lawsuit over the school’s use of "Chaser the Border Collie” as its mascot.
Chaser, known as “the world’s smartest dog,” holds the record for the largest vocabulary of any animal.
Since the death of Dr. John Pilley, known for his work with Chaser, his daughters Deborah and Robin have carried on his legacy through the “Chaser Initiative,” teaching kids about play-based learning across the state.
The Pilley's said they had an agreement with the college to use the “Chaser” name and image as a mascot and that the family had final approval over how it was used.
