SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - This week, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society announced they were pausing dog surrenders and adoptions due to dogs getting sick.
Dog rescue organizations are saying that it’s unfortunate timing.
The Humane Society confirmed on Thursday that there had been one case of canine distemper and that the affected dog had died.
Symptoms of this contagious virus were first noticed on Saturday and the shelter took precautions early. The situation is made worse by the number of dogs they have and the cost to test and treat the dogs while they’re in their care.
“I don’t even know if they were words. It was just heartbreak at first,” said SFAHS community outreach director Dana Konzem.
