The father of two infants killed in a fatal house fire that claimed four lives was undergoing treatment for cancer when he learned his babies were dead.

Jake Symons, 21, has been barely able to speak since being told his two children – Maddison, 20 months, and Desmond, five months – were killed in a fire that engulfed the family home on Thursday.

The cause of the fire at a duplex in Emerald, inland from Rockhampton, on Thursday morning remains a mystery as police plea for witnesses and dashcam vision.

The devastated father posted emotional and loving tributes to his children, begging forgiveness for failing to be by their side.
