Marlee Matlin, the first deaf actor to win an Academy Award, was the featured author Nov. 6 at a Stark Library event at Canton Palace Theatre.
Matlin, 60, is also an advocate for closed captioning in television and streaming platforms.
A documentary about Matlin's life was released this year and is on PBS, YouTube and various streaming platforms.
CANTON − Marlee Matlin summed up her mantra for life in three words − courage, dreams and success.
"Courage, plus dreams equal success," the deaf actor and advocate for the deaf community said through an interpreter at Canton Palace Theatre.
To emphasize the message, Matlin, 60, taught a near capacity crowd how to sign each of the three words.
