Britannia Industries plans to enter the ready-to-drink (RTD) protein beverage segment, said Varun Berry, Executive Vice-Chairman, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer.

During a post-quarter investor call, Berry confirmed that the company will launch protein drinks in an RTD format, but clarified that Britannia has no plans to enter the whey powders. “At this stage, we are not able to produce the quality of whey that goes into whey powders,” he said.

The RTD protein category has recently attracted new entrants such as Akshayakalpa Organic. Amul, too, offers protein-focused variants, including lassi and buttermilk.
