The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) announced on Monday , Nov. 3, that abandoned uranium mine cleanup operations have begun at the Lukachukai Mountains Mining District in the northern part of the Navajo Nation -- though the work planned so far will remediate only a small fraction of the mine waste in the area.
The mining district was added to the USEPA's National Priority List, more commonly known as the list of Superfund sites, last year . Navajo leaders welcomed the announcement at the time, but they also urged the federal government to follow through with concrete action.
