The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has distanced itself from the arrest of more than 17 people linked to recent violent attacks in Lilongwe.

The suspects are accused of orchestrating assaults in Kasungu and Mbowe, targeting Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members, civil servants, and human rights activist Sylvester Namiwa, as well as attacking peaceful demonstrators with panga knives.

Leader of Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda earlier claimed the arrests were politically motivated, saying they followed President Peter Mutharika’s address to Parliament.

However, Leader of the House Jappie Mhango dismissed those claims, saying arrests are the responsibility of law enforcement agencies.
