GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A Grand Island man charged with cutting his roommate with a broken beer bottle has been deemed unfit for trial.

Francisco Vela, 55, is charged with first-degree assault and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony.

Court records show police arrested Vela in June after a fight on North 15th Street. When officers arrived on scene they found a 50-year-old man bleeding from a severe cut to his arm.

A judge ruled Vela incompetent to stand trial on Oct. 27 after an examination by the Lincoln Regional Center. The judge ruled that Vela may be able to stand trial for his offenses in the future. He set a review hearing for Dec. 18.

Police said Vela and his roommate were arguing when Vela broke a beer bottle and cut the victim with it.
