Election results: Zohran Mamdani was elected the 111th mayor of New York City on Tuesday, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo with over 50% of the vote to become the youngest mayor in a century, as well as the first Muslim, the first person of South Asian descent and the first Democratic Socialist to hold the city’s highest office. Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa placed third. Over 2 million votes were cast in this election, the largest number since the 1969 mayoral election.
Voters also passed four ballot proposals that will speed up housing development by weakening City Council oversight of regional development, and rejected a proposal that would move local elections to align with presidential election years.
