There are only 16 Las Vegas area high school football teams with a game left to play.

The playoffs enter their second week tonight, giving athletes a stark reality: Many will be turning in their pads for the final time tonight.

That’s the beauty of prep football.

There are baseball and basketball leagues for adults. Cross country, golf and tennis are lifetime sports with plenty of adult tournaments. But for most, football ends after high school.

Class 3A is going back to its roots with an all-rural state quarterfinal: Boulder City travels to face Mesquite’s Virgin Valley High, and Pahrump heads to Overton to face Moapa Valley.

Class 5A has two games expected to be close — Centennial at Green Valley, and Faith Lutheran visiting Las Vegas.
